Super Macro

So, I used the Canon S3 IS at work today, and was blown away by the phenomenal quality of the camera. It has a mode on it called "Super Macro", well what it really should be called is "Super Fuckin' Amazing Macro" because it can focus so close in this mode that the lens can touch the subject. Here's an example:

I don't quite understand this, but the moral of the story is that I borrowed the camera for the weekend. I haven't borrowed a camera from work in ages, not since I got my first dSLR and started this blog I'll bet. Anyways, enjoy, I might have a few posts from this camera, as it is exciting me right now!

This was taken in Mississauga in the Erindale Park. Kevin and I went shooting there a little while ago and this came from that adventure. I should go back soon! It's beautiful there, and it's close to the UTM campus.

"Conrad stood there soaking wet in the swamp bog, wondering what the hell to do. It was a struggle to move twenty feet in this freaking muck. Every time he looked up, he was looking into a delirium of limbs, vines, dappled shadows, and a chopped-up white light that came through the tree-tops — the ubiquitous screen of trees with a thousand little places where the sun peeked through. Nevertheless, he started wading back out into the muck and the scum, and the others followed. He kept looking up. Gradually he could make it out. Up in the treetops there was a pattern of broken limbs where the SNJ had come crashing through. It was like a tunnel through the treetops. The trail veered to one side and started downward. They kept looking up and wading through the muck.

In the next instant — Conrad didn’t have to say a word. Each man could see it all. The lumpy sack was the cloth liner of a flight helmet, with the earphones attached to it. Burial Ground

I visited Baysville on the weekend, and now that it's Friday I'm finally getting around to posting some photos from the adventure. Baysville has a nice little dam on the river that goes through the main part of town. Linsee and I went down there for an adventure. While sitting on the rocks with my camera, she pointed out a little crayfish on the rocks, but it swam away backwards as I slowly and cautiously approached it. Anyways, I went lower on the rocks and found this little grave yard of crayfish bodies. It was pretty creepy at first, but turned out some neat, and interesting photos. Here they are!

Hello everyone! It was requested that I show a full picture of this tattoo on Linsee's side, so for those who wanted to see it - here it is, most of it.
In other news, I sold my wide angle lens today, meaning now I only have one lens to my kit, and an oversized bag to carry my camera. I went from 5 lenses 2 or so weeks ago, to 1 lens. Fund me so I can buy more lenses for my new camera :)

A Mild Convenience

This was really cool when I saw it. Back when I was working in Hamilton, taking the GoTrain each day, and filling my blog with pictures of the boring trains I took this photo of the escalators at the Bronte Station. They were doing maintenance on the sections of one of the escalators, and parts were taken off. This is how it looked in Tokina Wide-Angle form, it'll be sad to see this lens go - it's given me some great shots, and lead me to a love of WA. Tomorrow I will no longer own it, FJ is buying it off me, we will all look forward to the shots he'll get from it. :)

This right here is Nicholas, together we started making canoe paddles last summer. However, he finished his on his own, and mine sits unfinished in my closet in my house in Waterloo. I was planning to finish is with him this summer, but with me not going back there to live, that plan fell through. Will I ever finish this paddle? Who knows, but I do have this photo to remember Nick by. He likes his black and white film and his trusty manual Minolta camera.

Kevin likes to spend money, lots of money. Today we went on an adventure to Henrys in downtown Toronto, and he fulfilled his dream of spending lots of his money on new camera gear. Not only did he buy a sweet new body, and a sweet lens, he also bought some fun accessories. Good times were had, then we went out shooting with our new gear.

Moral of the story - if I ask you "should I bring my flash", you say yes, and then force me to bring it, cause fill flash is awesome times. Thanks.

Weed We Say

This is a picture of a plant we see cluttering up our lawns, we complain, we pluck them out, and kill them with chemicals. Are they really that bad? They add colour to an otherwise boring green grass cover, and cause no physical harm. I enjoy dandelions, and they're also fun to rub on peoples faces. Don't get rid of them, they're not an invasive species. However, you are, and you cause more damage to the planet on the whole.

Hey everyone! I finally have a new camera, well not so new. The camera came via Express mail and arrived on my doorstep this morning. Perfect timing, I can get some shots of the studio tonight. This is my first pro model dSLR, although it is 5 year old technology, I still consider it a huge upgrade from my old dSLR. I'm trying to get used to it, as it is build different from the ground up, and all of the controls are completely different. It's so pretty.

But more importantly - onto something else that is very pretty. Here's another from the shoot Jennifer and I did the other week. This has had a lot of processing work done on it to give it a different feel. I'm trying to branch out and learn new things, so that each time I shoot I get different results.

The Song I Swore Never To Sing

Wowie, this has taken a long time to get these photos up! I took these almost last month, well May 18th. I already posted the Sydney shots from the same night, they can still be seen in my archives.

Moral of the story - I'm slow sometimes, but I have been keeping busy with the photography, between shoots and eBaying.

I finally have a camera on its way to me. It was shipped today. It's a Canon 1D, and I'm very excited to be able to shoot with this camera. I can take more photos like these ones soon!

Back to the .moneen. show - it was a solid set. What more can I say? They played all the best songs, a bunch of new ones, got more into a live show than I've seen a band do in a while, rocked the fuck out, and let me shoot them while doing it. The live energy of the band pumped the audience all the way up, and an encore was played. Surrounded by a mass of photographers, including Kevin and Ryan and myself, they played a well documented evening. Solid set, great guys, good times. Thanks.

Now let's be honest - I haven't seen .moneen. in a few years, not since a show they played with boysnightout at the Trash in Guelph, I didn't enjoy them at that point in time, but in the last couple of years I've been blown away by their music, and was thrilled when The Red Tree came out. I've listened to it over and over again since, I was expecting good, and so I was pleasantly confirmed with a sound I love, infact I'm even going to throw it in right now, and get my head bobbing. I must set the mood for this post. Buy it. Listen to it. Love it. And most importantly make sure you watch out for them rocking on a stage near you. Dece.

Hidden Treasures

Jenn and I found this great skirt at Value VIllage the other week [$9.99 or something like that - great deal!], We had to test it out in an on the spot photoshoot in my backyard this past Sunday. It didn't turn out too bad for a shoot with no planning and a quick set-up. These were taken with natural light coming through the trees overhead.

I've recieved some mixed feedback on this shot, let me know what you think - there are lots of improvements I can make for next time. Give me your ideas my friends.

Photoshoot - Jennifer

Jenn and I went out to test a good outdoor spot for photos. This was my favorite from the day. I was using a 20D for the shoot since I didn't have my camera with me, so it was quite a test as the settings weren't the same as my customs settings I have been used to for the past year or so shooting with my 10D camera.

Here's another shot which I'm sure everyone will love! This is what she normally loooks like. :)

Some decent times in Hamilton lastweek. This is around the base of the liftbridge beside the Skyway Bridge going across the hamilton Harbour from Burlington to Hamilton. I was very scared of being pooped on while composing and taking this photograph. There were brids flying everywhere, nesting in the bridge I suppose, but when the horn alarmed to initiate the bridges lift sequence all of the birds went crazy. I got out of there quick!

I bought this lens on impulse, it's the most expensive thing I could imagine buying impulsively. Unfortunately I found it to not be the most sharp lens I have, hence not being able to justify the expense. I was more happy with the picture of it than the pictures I was getting of it. So, this was it. Now I need to find money to buy a new camera.
I went out shooting with Jennifer today, hopefully there will be some pictures of her coming up in the next few days. I know how much you people like pictures of, well, people!

Last Thursday I made the trip up to Waterloo in a huge rainstorm, battling the wind and rain I made it there in normal time to visit my pals before the show. I met up with Kevin and we headed over to the show on empty stomachs. The first band rocked, then there was the second band who played a long set - the kids seemed to like them though, but we sat back and downed a few brews compliments of Scotty from Sydney.

Sydney rocked the house, their fan base was decent sized considering it was their first time playing in Waterloo. Then there was Moneen, but we'll save that story for another day!

Not only is he a great photographer, he is often found as a part of a film production crew as a director of photography, camera operator or production assistant. He produces top-notch work, and is constantly searching for new innovative projects to get involved with. He enjoys long walks on the beach, skateboarding, wakeboarding, music and free golf on weekday afternoons.

I have always had an interest in photography, but I had never taken the time to seriously pursue it until I found my Dad's old Yashica film SLR. I am still very much in the learning stage and I havent taken any formal photography courses (one of my biggest regrets is not taking the photography course that my high school offered), but perhaps when I finish my last year of my Business degree at Laurier it will be something to look into. I don't really have a set style of shots that I like to take, so if you ever need anything photographed give me a shout!"

FJ was born in the Philippines in 1982, he now resides between his hometown of Pickering and his school in Waterloo, On. I met FJ at the Photo Club at UW, we’ve since worked together on one photography assignment and he’s taught me a great deal about photography, equipment, and eBay. He’s been taking pictures for the past 3 years, and does a phenomenal job. His favorite things in life range from his soulmate, Carmen, to singing and dancing, photography and basketball. He also likes tennis, but I told him he could only have 5 interests.

Well, things keep getting better and better in the life of this guy. Today I wake up with a sore throat and end up in the apple store dropping my workhorse computer off for repair. Something fried in my baby, maybe it has to do with leaving it turned on for the last 5 months straight? Way to be an environmentalist! So couple my oncoming cold, with my broken knuckle, and a dying computer, and you have how I feel right now. On the upside my computer might be covered under warranty. On the dowside I won't have it back till mid next week. That's my story - now here's a random picture for you.

Boys Will Be

These kids don't really like to fight one another, but their parents get really into it. When the kids complain and start crying the parents yell at them and tell them to suck it up. These young boys were 5 years old. This was taken at the 2005 Mid American Taekwondo Championships in Oxford Ohio.
I found it in my archives, and thought it was worthy of a post.

This is used, as you may know from my previous post, for irrigation from the pond to the right of the pump to the fields in the background. It's only used in the spring though. Weird. I need some better shots to fill up my blog, but I think I broke my hand. Maybe I should go to the doctors, maaybe not! Either way, I need to shoot more.

Fields Of TTC

So, this weekend was very productive, and extremely fun. Kevin, C-Ing and myself went to London then to Waterloo. We finally, after many hopes and days of bad weather, were blessed with a beautiful day to stop on the side of Highway 6 and take some shots of this out of place streetcar. We had fun on the farmers fields, and even ventured inside the abandoned art installation. Moral of the story: I took this pic, among others, and had a great enjoyable weekend.
